Topiramate isused alone or with other medications to prevent and control seizures.

Topiramate isa seizure medicine, also called an anticonvulsant.

Topiramateused to prevent migraine headaches and reduce number of attacks.

Topiramatewill not treat a migraine headache once it occurs.

PHARMACOKINETICS

Absorption: Rapidlyabsorbed. Relative bioavailability of drug is about 80% compared with asolution and isn’t affected by food.

Distribution: Plasmalevels increase proportionately with dose; mean elimination half-life is 21hours. Steady state is reached in 4 days in patients with normal renalfunction. Drug is 13% to 17% bound to plasma proteins.

Metabolism: Notextensively metabolized.

Excretion: About 70% ofan administered dose is eliminated unchanged in urine. Mean plasma half-life is21 hours.
